Patient Information Sheet – Body Washing Before Surgery
Dear Patient,
We wish you success with the surgery you are about to undergo and a speedy recovery.There are many bacteria on the body that are part of the natural bacteria population of the human body.Before the surgery, the quantity of bacteria must be reduced to the extent possible so as
not to infect the surgical wound. The bacteria population on the surface of your body can be reduced by correct washing. These directions will allow you to wash yourself efficiently and correctly.
Following are the directions:
- You should wash yourself and wash your hair the evening before the surgery and
- repeat the procedure on the morning of the surgery.
- This should be done under running water (in the shower) with soap.
- The body areas that require special attention due to a large accumulation of bacteria
- are: underarms, beneath the breasts, the umbilical area, the genital area, the groin and the buttocks.
Washing stages:
- Wash your hair.
- Wash your upper body with a wet sponge dipped in soap to create foam, especially your underarms and beneath your breasts.
- Wash your lower body. The umbilical area is particularly important. Scrub the area of the genitals and buttocks thoroughly so that the soap penetrates the folds.
- Rinse your body.
- Repeat procedures 1-4.
- Dry yourself thoroughly with a towel and put on clean clothing.
Please Note!
Do not remove hair from the surgical site (in any manner) at home!
Hair from the surgical site will be removed only by the attending staff
in the department and/or operating room and not by the patient.
