Synopsis
Scaphoid fractures are common wrist fractures and are typically a disease of young males falling on an outstretched hand. • These injuries require prolonged periods of immobilization and are commonly missed, resulting in further disability. Our aim is to better understand the biomechanics of scaphoid fractures in order to better isolate the stable fractures in need of short immobilization and unstable injuries, which need longer immobilization or surgery. This will be achieved by means of patient-specific 3D models of the bones and bone fragments derived from CT scans and by custom algorithms. In addition, we plan to examine superior approaches to surgical care, related to the new insight into these injuries.
