Synopsis

Throughout my medical training and career as a clinical OB/Gyn, I have authored 300 scholarly articles on a wide range of basic and clinical research topics. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=yagel+s+NOT+%22yagel+SK%22

My clinical research focuses primarily on 3D/4D ultrasound of the fetal cardiovascular system and functional evaluation of the fetal heart, 3D/4D neurosonography, and 3D/4D in other organ systems, as well as 3DUS of the female pelvic floor, and the impact of fetal head circumference on obstetric outcomes. I co-edited the first two editions of the textbook Fetal Cardiology; the third edition is in preparation.

The basic research in my lab focuses on developmental molecular biology of trophoblast cell function and placental development. We investigate the molecular mechanisms of trophoblast invasion in embryo implantation and pregnancy. Our work explores the implications of gene expression on the development of pathologies of pregnancy and placentation. In collaboration with immunologists we continue to explore NK cells at the maternal-fetal interface: their role as builders in implantation and development. We engaged in studies of the molecular mechanisms involved in the expression of placenta-derived circulating anti-angiogenic factors in the serum of pregnant women and their role in preeclampsia. We are exploring gene expression in the syncytiotrophoblast and mechanisms of progenitor cytotrophoblast cell fusion. We have collaborated extensively with virologists developing a novel model to study mechanisms of human CMV transmission and pathogenesis at the maternal-fetal interface.

I am a frequent guest lecturer in the topics of my clinical and basic research, both in Israel and abroad.
