המרכז לקרדיו-אונקולוגיה מיועד למטופלים אונקולוגיים הנמצאים בסיכון לפגיעה בתפקוד שריר הלב, עד כדי התפתחות של אי ספיקת לב. מצב זה עלול להיגרם כתוצאה מהתקדמות המחלה האונקולוגית או משימוש בתרופות כימותרפיות וביולוגיות בעלות פוטנציאל לנזק לבבי.

חולים אלו זקוקים למעקב הדוק בשיתוף פעולה מלא עם המחלקה האונקולוגית, לרבות הערכת הסיכון לנזק לבבי לפני התחלת הטיפולים האונקולוגיים, במהלך טיפול ובמעקב אחר חולים המפתחים פגיעה לבבית בעקבות הטיפול.

Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the Hadassah Medical Center and Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. Formerly Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology/Echocardiography of the Heart Institute and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. After having established the Cardio-Oncology service in Hadassah serves as its director since and is Leading Cardio-Oncology in the Shamir (formerly Assaf-Harofeh) Medical Center. He has also introduced (2019) Cardio-Oncology into Maccabi Health Services. Prof. Gilon serves on the committee preparing the guidelines on Cardio-Oncology services in Israel and is Vice-President of the Israeli chapter of the International Cardio-Oncology Society.

He is the founder and first chairman of the Israeli Working Group on Echocardiography of the Israeli Heart Society and chairman of the International Scientific Committee of the Michel Mirowski Award in Cardiology, bestowed annually at the Israeli Heart Society Annual meeting.

Professor Gilon trained in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Hadassah Medical Center and completed his fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard in Boston, USA.

He is an International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS)-certified Cardio-Oncologist. Recently the Cardio-Oncology Program at Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center, directed by Prof. Gilon, was recognized and awarded the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS) Center of Excellence status.

Also, heading, with colleagues, the active participation of Hadassah in the International Registry of Aortic Dissection (IRAD), participates (with colleagues) as a member representative of Israel on the Bicuspid Aortic Valve International Consortium (BAVCon).

He has published on cardio oncology related issues, valvular heart disease with special emphasis on two and three dimensional structural and functional understanding, Aortic dissection, catheter related intracardiac thrombus formation mechanisms, and basic research on myocardial hypertrophy and VEGF-dependent cardiac function.
